We spent a relaxing weekend break during the festive season discovering the stunning Chateau Vaux Le Vicomte and the charming painters' village of Barbizon on the east of Paris. We also dined at some fabulous restaurants.

Chateau Vaux le Vicomte

Construction of this enchanting chateau began in 17th century for Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's finance minister.

Inside the chateau had been decorated in festive splendour showcasing its opulent interiors with luxurious Christmas trees and whimisical fairy tale settings.

The gardens designed by the famous landscape architect, Andre Le Notre are beautiful and include sweeping terraces, sculptures, fountains, canals and formal lawns.

Barbizon

This charming picturesque village sits on edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau and is known for the 19th century Barbizon School of painters, which includes Rousseau, Millet and Corot.

We stayed and dined in the Hotellerie Bas Breau, where the writer Robert Louis Stevenson was also a regular visitor.

We enjoyed a stroll along the main tree lined street dotted with historic buildings, art galleries, museums and inviting cafes. Jean Francois Millet's art studio is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

Before returning to Paris we indulged in some delicious crepes and cider.
