We had a weekend break in Strasbourg in Alsace near the eastern border with Germany. We visited the gothic cathedral and explored the historic Petite France district with its half-timbered medieval houses and its quays overlooking branches of the river Ill.
We also dined at some fabulous restaurants.
Cathedral of Notre Dame, Strasbourg
Construction of this majestic Gothic cathedral started in 1015 and finished in 1439.
Inside the cathedral is the astronomical clock with many features including the sun, phases of the moon, stars and zodiac signs. At 12.30 the automaton show begins with the chiming of a bell. Then figures of the apostles move before Christ and a mechanical rooster flaps its wings and crows.
Petite France
This UNESCO heritage site is a historic and picturesque district on the River Ill known for its cobbled streets and medieval architecture which once housed tanners, millers and fishermen.
