This year I celebrated my birthday in Paris with a leisurely lunch followed by an afternoon visiting the Conciergerie and Sainte Chapelle.

John took me out for Sunday lunch at the Cafe Marly near the Louvre.

In the sunshine we walked across the river to the Ile de la Cité to the
Conciergerie.

This 14th century building was first a palace for the kings and later became
a prison. During the French Revolution Marie Antoinette spent her last days here
before being transported to Place de la Concorde to be guillotined.

Nearby is the Palais de Justice and the Sainte Chapelle.

In the upper chapel of the Sainte Chapelle the 15 stained glass windows
depict 1 113 scenes from the Old Testament and the Passion of Christ. The detail
in the scenes and the vivid colours are absolutely amazing.
