On our New York holiday as well as seeing the sights on
Manhatten Island we took
a trip on the Staten Island ferry and also visited
Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty
on Liberty Island.
Staten Island Ferry

We caught the free ferry from Lower Manhatten to Staten island.

and enjoyed the views of Brooklyn Bridge,

the Statue of Liberty

and Lower Manhattan's skyline.

Needless to say we did the same as all the other tourists on the boat and
promptly disembarked upon reaching Staten Island and caught the return trip
back.
Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty
The next day we decided to take a closer look at the Statue of Liberty and
visited Liberty Island.
The statue was a gift from the French to the American people and was designed
by the sculptor, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi.

The statue is 93m high and the pedestal
is set within the walls of an army fort. |
Ellis
Island

We took the Miss Ellis Island ferry

to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum
The museum tells the story of how approximately 12 million people passed
through its gates when it was the country's immigration depot from 1892 to 1954.

On arrival from the ships the immigrant families were made to wait in the
Great Hall

before being registered and undergoing various legal, financial and medical
examinations.
Sick people had to go the hospital on the island, but those with contagious
diseases were sent back home.

It is a very interesting museum and many Americans can trace their roots back
to Ellis Island.
