We spent a wonderful spring holiday travelling by train to Germany visiting Fussen in Bavaria, Germany and the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein. We then travelled to Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, Germany before crossing over the Swiss border to Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls. We also dined at some fabulous restaurants.

Fussen and Neuschwanstein Castle Bavaria

Neuschwanstein Castle, one of Germany’s most iconic landmarks, was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869. Nestled in the Bavarian Alps near Füssen, its fairytale towers and dramatic setting inspired Walt Disney’s famous Sleeping Beauty castle. We admired the castle's romantic architecture, breathtaking views, and magical atmosphere.

Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance

Set on the tranquil shores of Lake Constance, Friedrichshafen is a small town known for its scenic waterfront. We visited the Zeppelin museum offering a fascinating insight into the history of these pioneering aircraft. We enjoyed leisurely walks along the lakeside promenade and a boat trip across the lake admiring panoramic views of the Alps.

Schaffhausen and Rhine Falls, Switzerland

Schaffhausen is a picturesque medieval town set on the banks of the River Rhine with beautifully painted buildings.

Nearby is the spectacular Rhine Falls. Known as the largest waterfall in Europe by volume, the Rhine Falls is an awe-inspiring natural wonder, where powerful cascades of water thunder over the rocks. Visitors can enjoy panoramic viewpoints, boat trips close to the falls, and scenic riverside walks.

We discovered several good local bars and restaurants, enjoying some classic German and Swiss dishes along the way.
