To celebrate New Year 2004 John, Neil, April and I hired a farmhouse gite in
Brittany for a few days. We were based between Cancale and
St Malo, so we were
able to explore the surrounding area and visit Pointe du
Grouin, St. Briac and
on our journey back to Paris we stopped off at Mont St.
Michel.
Cancale
On
New Year's Eve we visited Cancale. It's a pretty little seaside town famous for
its oysters.

John
& I like to practise throwing our frisbee. April and Neil were
keen to join in the Ultimate Game. Before long we were all
demonstrating our frisbee flicks with great speed, agility and grace!
Pointe du Grouin
After
all that excitement we then drove round the coast to Pointe du Grouin
We
walked along the cliff top path with its gorse and bracken.

The
Île des Landes, a long bare outcrop, which is now a bird sanctuary.

It was a gorgeous sunny day and the views were
wonderful. |
In the distance you can see the lighthouse and on a
clear day you can pick out the Normandy coast and the outline of Mont St. Michel
Saint-Briac Sur Mer
Saint-Briac is another picturesque fishing village not far from Saint
Malo,
with
sandy beaches
and
rocky shores.

Saint-Malo
We visited Saint Malo, a delightful seaside town with
its famous city walls, which surround the narrow winding streets.

and
walk along the walls.
Mont St Michel
Too
soon our holiday was over and it was time to return to Paris. On the way
we stopped at Mont St Michel in Normandy.
In the distance it's a spectacular sight.
We
soon reached the rocky island fortress, which rises dramatically out of a large
sandy bay.
Perched
on the top is the magnificent abbey.
We
walked along the causeway to the island.
The
climb up to the abbey is quite steep and it's a real tourist trap, full of cafes
and souvenir shops.
The
streets are very narrow
and
some of the doorways are so tiny.
We
climb up the ramparts
and
are rewarded with stunning views out to sea.
What
an excellent holiday to start the new year.
I'm looking forward to
more travels in 2004, so watch out for more photos in the forthcoming months.
