We travelled to America in the summer and visited historic
Boston, scenic Cape Cod,
colonial
Plymouth,
and infamous Salem. As usual we sampled the local cuisine including lobster and
clam chowder and dined at some wonderful restaurants.
Boston
The formal English style Public Garden in the heart of Boston with its
ornamental bridge.

This duck sculpture is in tribute to Robert McCloskey and his children's story 'Make way for ducklings",
which is set in Boston.

The Massachusetts State House with its dome sheathed in copper and gold

We stayed in the beautiful residential area of Beacon Hill in a typical
Boston Brownstone

Skyscrapers in the Back Bay district.

Boston public library was founded in 1848.

On a Duck Tour we toured the city on land and water on a replica WWII amphibious vehicle

The 19th century Old City Hall has now been renovated and contains a steakhouse

Across the Charles River is Cambridge and Harvard University. Founded in 1636 it
is the oldest university in the United States.


Cape Cod
is known for its beaches and natural beauty as well as its charming and quaint
colonial villages.

Edgartown on the island of Martha's Vineyard.

Edgartown was a primary port for the whaling industry in the 18th and 19th
centuries.

Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard is noted for the well preserved Victorian
gingerbread cottages.


White picket fences and blue hydrangeas are in abundance.

Sandwich. The Dexter Grist Mill has been restored and once again produces
cornmeal.

Whale watching.

The humpback whales are regular summer visitors and we soon spotted several of
them.


Many historic mansions built by wealthy sea captains and merchants have been
transformed into chic boutique hotels.

Relaxing on the veranda after a hard day of sightseeing.
Plymouth
In 1620 pilgrims on the Mayflower ship arrived at Plymouth and established the
first permanent English settlement in the New World.

The Plimoth Plantation is a living history museum exploring the life of the English
colonists who settled here.



Alongside is a Native American village demonstrating early 17th century life.


Salem
is infamous for its Witch Trials.

In 1692 many innocent people were jailed and executed for practicing
witchcraft.

The Custom House was established in the 19th century as the town became a
major port.

House of the Seven Gables is the home of author, Nathaniel Hawthorne.
