In March John and I visited Zarzis, which is in the south of Tunisia .  We took an excursion around the island of Djerba including a trip to the pottery village of Guellala.  We also spent a nice relaxing time on our holiday sampling the local cuisine and lazying around on the beach

One day we took a scooter tour around the island of Djerba.

We visited Houmt Souk, the island's capital and saw the 15th century Spanish fort.

"I'm just looking, thanks," said John.

We wandered around the souks (markets),

and the brightly coloured hand crafted pots, plates and dishes.

Then we explored the city's narrow streets

John in Houmt Souk, Djerba, Tunisia I had to take a photo of something so fake!
and discovered some shady courtyard gardens and even an orange grove!

Guellala

Later we stopped at the village of Guellala, which is famous for pottery and crafts.

all we need now is the fish couscous

Potters still make the ceramics by hand.

Some pots are even large enough to climb inside.

Food

Naturally our trip to Tunisia included eating lots of delicious coucous, olives and figs.

sampling fish and lamb couscous at a local restaurant - delicious!

Our hotel was right next to the sea and we often ambled through the gardens full of palm and olive trees,

and down the little path leading to the Mediterranean Sea.

Once there all we had to decide was whether we fancied a sunny or a shady spot

what bliss!

                                                         and then...relax!
