In June John and I spent a lovely weekend in the south of France in
Nimes and we visited the famous Pont du Gard.
We also discovered a wonderful restaurant. Nimes Nimes is full of Roman monuments and in the centre there is a very well preserved Roman arena. It was built in the 1st century AD and is currently used for concerts and bull fights.
The Maison Carrée is a Roman Temple, which is now part of the art museum complex.
Jardin de La Fontaine is beautiful to stroll around.
The natural spring formed the centre of the ancient town founded by the Gauls.
The ruins of the Temple of Diana are also situated in the park.
Not far from Nimes is the Pont du Gard.
This amazing Roman aqueduct is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
It was built over 2000 years ago to transport water from Uzès to Nimes.
It's approximately 300m long and 50m high.
Visitors can walk across the bridge and enjoy spectacular views of the river and surrounding countryside.
We enjoyed dining at an excellent restaurant situated opposite the Roman arena in Nimes.
An delightful way to end our weekend trip.
