In August John and I enjoyed a holiday in the North West of England. We stayed in Manchester and visited Southport and Crosby Beach as well as seeing various friends and family.

Manchester Palace Hotel

This historic red brick grade II listed building used to be the Refuge Assurance building and is situated on Oxford Road.

It has recently been refurbished into a very attractive hotel.

Richly glazed decorative tiles enhance the interiors and give the rooms lots of character.

Crosby Beach

British sculptor, Antony Gormley's exhibition, Another Place is a massive installation consisting of 100 life size cast-iron figures dotted along three kilometres of the shore.

The figures all stare out to sea, face in the same direction and are in the same pose, although some stand nearer the shoreline whilst others are nearer the sea.Crosby Beach statues

We saw some other works by Antony Gormley when we visited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park earlier in the summer.

Southport

The pier at Southport is the second longest pier in the UK.

As usual the tide was out and we could only just see the sea!

Wayfarers Arcade is a magnificent Victorian shopping arcade on Lord Street.

Inside is a statue of the famous racehorse, Red Rum.

He was locally trained and stabled and won the Grand National Steeple Chase 3 times (1973, 1974 and 1977).
